Scotford
Cogeneration Project
A 170-megawatt cogeneration plant has been constructed to provide steam and electricity to meet the thermal and power needs of the Athabasca Oilsands Upgrader.
The Upgrader utilizes two-thirds of the electricity generated with the
balance sold into the Alberta Interconnected Grid Energy from the
exhaust of the gas turbine is recovered in the heat recovery boiler to provide steam for the Upgrader and the steam turbine.
The Scotford cogeneration project has been constructed at the Shell Scotford Refinery Site east of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta
and is part of the Athabasca Oilsands Project joint venture between Shell Canada Limited, Chevron Canada Resources Limited and Western Oilsands LP. The Scotford Upgrader
has been in operation since late 2002 and treats 155,000 barrels of bitumen per calendar day into a range of premium, synthetic crude oils.
