Rainbow Lake
Cogeneration Plant
This 90-megawatt gas-fired cogeneration and peaking facility is adjacent to a gas plant owned and operated by
Husky Oil at Rainbow Lake, 900 kilometres north of Edmonton. The first unit began operating in February 1999 and the second one in December 2001.
The plant features two LM6000 gas turbines and one heat recovery steam generator. Huskys gas plant uses the steam produced by the plant. Electric energy is sold into the Power Pool of Alberta.
The plants location in northern Alberta results in improved reliability and significantly reduces line losses in a relatively remote part of the province.
ATCO Power completed a 15-year, $150 million non-recourse financing through the Royal Bank of Scotland of its ownership interests in six independent Alberta power projects. The
financing covers power plants totaling almost 300 megawatts of capacity at Primrose, Poplar Hill, Valleyview, two at Rainbow Lake and the Oldman River hydroelectric project.
