  Osborne Cogeneration Celebrates 10 Years

The Osborne Cogeneration Plant reached a significant milestone in December 2008, celebrating their 10th anniversary. The 180-megawatt power facility located near Adelaide is one of Australia’s largest cogeneration facilities and provides approximately 10% of South Australia’s electric energy.

During its 10 years of operational excellence, the facility has continued to have high availability and excellent environmental, health and safety records. A recent important operational highlight was the $1 million (Australian dollars) upgrade that  increased electricity output by 4.8 % and decreased heat rate by 0.94 %. This equates to producing the same amount of electricity annually with a reduction of approximately 1% of the natural gas utilized and 6,000 less tonnes of CO2 emissions.

ATCO Power managed the construction of Osborne, which incorporated many state-of-the-art features. The plant is 50% more efficient than a conventional gas or coal-fired power station. Its advanced technology reduces nitrous oxide (NOx) emissions by at least 80% and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 35% to 50% more than that of conventional power stations.

ATCO Power is the operator of the Osborne plant and a 50% owner in the facility along with Origin Energy of Australia.
