Muskeg River Cogeneration Plant

The 170-megawatt cogeneration plant provides steam and electricity to meet the requirements of the Muskeg River Mine. Any electricity generated and not used at the mine is sold into the Power Pool of Alberta. Energy from the turbines hot exhaust gas is captured for use in the mines bitumen extraction process.

ATCO Pipelines has built a 16-inch pipeline, which supplies natural gas to the cogeneration facility. The 118 kilometer line comes from an existing gas transmission system.

ATCO Electric built and operates a 260 kV substation that provides electricity to the Alberta Interconnected Electric grid.

The cogeneration project is owned by ATCO Power (70%) and SaskPower International Inc. (30%). The Muskeg River Mine located on Lease 13, 70 kilometers north of Fort McMurray, Alberta, is part of the Athabasca Oil Sands Project joint venture between Shell Canada Limited, Chevron Canada Resources Limited and Western Oil Sands L.P.
