The Battle River Generating Station is located about 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton on the banks of the Battle River. The station is a major employer for people living in the farming communities surrounding the station.

The majority of Alberta’s electric energy comes from coal-fired generating stations like Battle River. Prairie Mines & Royalty Ltd. supplies the coal which is surface-mined from the Paintearth and Vesta coal mines. The mines are located directly south of the station, making transportation of the coal fast and efficient.

Water for the Battle River Generating Station is supplied by a reservoir created in 1954 by a 12-metre high dam located on the Battle River.

The Battle River Generating Station works with the mining company Prairie Mines & Royalty Ltd. to ensure the land that is mined is returned to levels of productivity as good or better than existed previously to mining.

The Battle River Generating Station operates within all legislated environmental limits and continues to strive to operate the plant efficiently to minimize emissions.
