Battle River Coal-Fired Generating Station

The Battle River Generating Station is located approximately 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton on the banks of the Battle River. The station is a major employer for people living in the farming communities surrounding the station.

The majority of Alberta’s electric energy comes from coal-fired generating stations like Battle River. Prairie Mines & Royalty Ltd. supplies the coal which is surface-mined from the Paintearth and Vesta coal mines. The mines are located directly south of the station, making transportation of the coal fast and efficient.

Water for the Battle River Generating Station is supplied by a reservoir created in 1954 by a 12 metre high dam located on the Battle River.

The Battle River Generating Station works with the mining company Prairie Mines & Royalty Ltd. to ensure that the mined land is returned to levels of productivity as good as or better than existed prior to mining.

The Battle River Generating Station operates within all legislated environmental limits and continues to strive to operate the plants efficiently to minimize emissions.

Equipment

• Units 3 and 4 have Alstom boilers and
  General Electric turbine-generators
• Unit 5 has an Alstom boiler and a Hitachi
  turbine-generator

Highlights

• Battle River Station has operated since
  1956, but Units 1 and 2 were retired and
  dismantled in 2000
• Unit 3 went into service in 1969, Unit 4 in
  1975 and Unit 5 in 1981
