Rainbow Lake 1, 2 & 3

ATCO Power’s Rainbow Lake Generating Plant is part of the most northerly generating facility connected to the Alberta system.

Today, after many years of base load operations, these units are primarily operated to provide system and peak load support.

The Rainbow Lake Generating Station is located 14 kilometers southeast of the town of Rainbow Lake about 900 kilometers north of Edmonton.

The Rainbow Lake Generating Plant is fuelled by natural gas.

  • 88 megawatts

Equipment

  • Unit 1 is a Westinghouse W201 simple cycle gas turbine
  • Units 2 and 3 are Brown Boveri Type 11S and 11L simple cycle gas turbines

Highlights

  • Unit 1 was installed at Vermillion in 1961 and relocated to Rainbow Lake in 1968
  • Unit 2 was installed at Rainbow Lake in 1970
  • Unit 3 was installed at Simonette in 1966 and relocated to Rainbow Lake in 1993
