Sheerness
Generating Station Receives Environmental Management System Registration
December 3,
2001
ATCO Powers Sheerness Generating Station has received its registration with the International Organization for Standardizations Model for environmental management systems under ISO 14001. The Station received its registration from KPMG Quality Registrar Inc.
Station Manager Tom Libbrecht said: I am especially proud of this accomplishment and credit the successful registration to the hard work and commitment of our staff at the station. They made it happen.
The ISO 14001 Registration is an international set of standards that guides companies in implementing and maintaining an effective environmental management system. The EMS supports and is consistent with the commitment made in ATCO Powers Environmental Policy.
To qualify for ISO 14001 Registration, companies identify the aspects of their organization that have the potential to significantly impact the environment. Objectives and targets related to these areas are set and specific programs are implemented to manage these areas. The company must demonstrate that it has addressed all areas of the standard. Procedures are also documented to ensure each area is monitored and controlled.
In the registration process, KPMG Quality Registrar Inc., conducted an on-site review and confirmed the company followed those procedures. Ongoing regular audits will be conducted to make sure standards are maintained.
Being ISO registered demonstrates that the station has met a demanding International Standard and has processes in place to effectively manage the environmental aspects of generating electricity.
ATCO Power and TransAlta jointly own the Station. ATCO Power is the managing owner.
