ATCO Power and Husky Energy Boost Generation Capacity in North West Alberta

Wednesday July 26, 2001

Project Provides Increased Grid Stability in Growing Part of Province

Calgary, AB – ATCO Power and Husky Energy have reached an agreement with the Alberta Transmission Administrator to provide additional electricity generating capacity to northwestern Alberta.

Husky and ATCO will install a 46 MW generator unit along side their existing jointly owned 46 MW cogeneration unit at Rainbow Lake. The additional unit, expected to start generating new power by the end of this year or no later than January, 2002, will deliver increased stability to the power grid in the region of the province.

The project has been granted approval permits by Alberta Environment and the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board. Public notice of the permits is in progress. Major construction work will commence immediately.

ATCO Power President, Gary Bauer, said “We are very pleased that we have been able to adjust our projects in order to more closely meet the electricity needs of Albertans. We are impressed with the cooperation that has been demonstrated by all the parties involved in this project.”

In March, ATCO Power announced that it would install two General Electric, LM 6000 gas turbine generators with a capacity of 92 MW at its existing site near Grande Prairie at Valleyview Alberta. One of these units will now be redirected to the Rainbow Lake site consistent with the transmission system needs. Construction on the Valleyview project is progressing as per schedule for an in-service date of November 2001.

ATCO Power is a world leader in the development of environmentally progressive generation facilities. It has built, owns and operates power plants in Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia. In Alberta, since deregulation commenced, ATCO Power has built or has under construction sufficient generating capacity to supply 900,000 households. The plants are located at Primrose, Poplar Hill, Joffre, Rainbow Lake, Scotford, Muskeg River, Valleyview, and the Oldman River Dam. ATCO Power also operates three coal-fired generating stations in Alberta with a capacity of 1600 MW.

ATCO Power is a member of the ATCO Group, an Alberta-based corporation with a worldwide organization of companies and more than 6000 employees engaged in power generation, utilities, logistics and energy services, industrials and technologies.
