New Power Generation Plant Considered for Windsor

Monday July 16, 2001

Calgary, AB - ATCO Power Ltd. of Calgary will be hosting a Public Information Session for a natural gas fired power plant proposed for the Brighton Beach area of the City of Windsor. The power plant will be a combined cycle facility capable of generating up to 580 megawatts of electricity at peak winter output. The Information Session will run from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Mackenzie Hall, 3277 Sandwich Street on July 25. The project is subject to the Ministry of Environment’s Screening Process for electricity projects.

The proposed environmentally progressive project will consist of two state of the art gas turbines coupled to a single steam turbine to achieve high efficiency and low emissions in the production of electricity. This process, known as combined cycle, utilizes the waste heat from the gas turbines to generate steam to run the steam turbine, which significantly increases the efficiency of power production.

The site that is being considered is the former Ontario Power Generation (OPG) J. Clark Keith Generating Station site, which ceased operation in 1984 and was demolished in 1997. OPG is a partner in the project with ATCO Power, although the electricity generated will not add to OPG’s generating capability in the Province.

Electricity produced at the proposed plant will be controlled and marketed by Coral Energy Canada Inc., an unaffiliated power marketer and a member of the global Shell Trading network. Coral’s involvement will enhance the successful creation of a competitive electricity market in Ontario since it brings worldwide experience in deregulated markets in natural gas and electricity to the Province.

ATCO is a world leader in the development and operation of environmentally progressive generation facilities. It has constructed and operates 13 power plants in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia and currently has 6 plants under construction in Alberta and Saskatchewan.
