Bulwer
Island Cogen Project Awarded Prestigious Australian Construction
Achievement Award
Thursday
July 5, 2001
The
Queensland Clean Fuels Project, which includes the Bulwer Island
Cogeneration Project, has been awarded the Australian Construction
Achievement Award for 2001 by the Australian Institute of Engineers and
the Australian Constructors Association.
The
cogeneration project provides 32 MW of electricity and 55 MW of
thermal-equivalent to BPs hydrogen-treatment facility. Electricity from
the project is also sold into the power grid. The cogeneration project was
developed and constructed by ATCO Power, Lend Lease Capital and Origin
Energy. Lend Lease has since sold its interest to the other two partners.
The award
was granted for the process by which the facility was developed and
constructed and the technology employed. An alliance of representatives
from each of the project partners oversaw the project and looked to the
long-term benefits rather than short-term project completion. This allowed
a very high level of integration between the various facilities in the
project. The use of cogen to provide the refinerys electricity and heat
requirements demonstrated a forward thinking approach in the application
of technology. The cogen is fueled by natural gas and refinery waste gas.
The Bulwer
Island Cogen officially opened October 3, 2000 ahead of schedule and under
budget. It commenced commercial operation on January 1, 2001.
