Calgary,
Alberta: ATCO Power will build its seventh new power plant in Alberta
since deregulation began in the province. The $70 million, 92 MW
generating facility, which is capable of supplying enough electricity for
75,000 homes, will be built in record time and produce power by next
winter.
"This
environmentally progressive, low nitrous oxide plant will be built by ATCO
Power in 10 months," said ATCO Power President, Gary Bauer. "ATCO
Power has committed significant investment in new power generation
facilities in Alberta since deregulation," he added.
The new
plant will be built at the company's existing Sturgeon site, near
Valleyview, Alberta 100 kms east of Grande Prairie. The plant will also
provide system stability benefits for northwestern Alberta and be an
important addition of capacity to meet Albertas growing power
requirements.
The power
plant is comprised of two General Electric natural gas turbine generators,
similar to ATCO Powers two other plants in northwestern Alberta at
Poplar Hill and Rainbow Lake. The choice of this technology and the
Sturgeon site was made to bring additional electricity to Alberta as
rapidly as possible. Located at an existing power plant site, electricity
grid connections and other required infrastructure are already in place.
ATCO will continue to operate the two small natural gas turbine units at
the site, with a capacity of 18 MW, that have been in service since 1957.
ATCO Power
is a world leader in the development of environmentally progressive
generation facilities. It has built, owns and operates power plants in
Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia. In Alberta, ATCO Power has
recently built or has under construction with partners six independent
power plants capable of generating sufficient new electricity to supply
750,000 households. The plants are located at Primrose, Poplar Hill,
Joffre, Rainbow Lake, Scotford, and Muskeg River. ATCO Power also operates
three coal-fired generating stations in Alberta with a capacity of over
1500 MW.
ATCO Power
is a member of the ATCO Group, an Alberta-based corporation with a
worldwide organization of companies and more than 6000 employees engaged
in power generation, utilities, logistics and energy services, industrials
and technologies. More information about ATCO can be found on its website,
